This quarterly lecture series invites published and critically acclaimed scholars to engage community members regarding their work in the study of African American culture and history. This program hosts scholars on the national stage and allows Kansas Citians the opportunity to contribute to significant intellectual trends and debates.
Mbembe Milton Smith Poetry Series
This poetry series highlights the contributions of artists whose work provokes discussion of provocative historical issues related to our community, region, and country. This series also features an interactive poetry workshop component where participants, inspired by the featured artist, can hone their skills in the development of this classic art form.
Soul of Art Pop Up Gallery
This program coincides with the larger “First Friday” arts initiative in Kansas City’s “Crossroads.” It features a variety of mixed media artists whose work interrogates prominent aspects of African American life and culture. Artists featured in this program express themselves through sculpture, painting, photography, and through performance art.
Black Documentary Discussion Group
This program series features award-winning documentaries portraying the triumphs and challenges of the African American experience. Program participants engage in a spirited review of featured documentaries, and exchange with moderators who have a level of expertise in the subject matter being addressed. This program also takes place on a quarterly basis.
